All my identifiers start with a. I blog about pretty things, Abraham Lincoln, whatever I'm thinking about, and how much I don't want to do my homework.

How Gay’ Has ‘Stay[ed] White’ for Over a Decade
“We must learn that ignoring or separating any type of oppression from another is a result of privileged ignorance, and it will remain so as long as gay stays white.”

This is fascinating in a ‘we already knew this but someone is actually saying it’ way.
Let’s go back to my problem with the trailer for the documentary that was floating around a week or so ago. THAT PROBLEM STILL EXISTS.
Also I sort of have a problem with the idea that trans* people (and bi people (and, um… pan people, and any multiple-sex/multiple-gender-loving person), for that matter, but I don’t have any  have the same concerns/privileges as (cis) GL people. It’s applicable in the same sense as the race/sexuality discrimination overlap, and if you’re trans*, gay and a POC, there are three systems at play that need to be dealt with.
Just. This is the same problem with a lot of brands of feminism/feminist websites. It calls back, to a certain extent, the fact that women were ignored during the civil rights movement (although the first people to really talk about this were white women), or that women were pushed out of the anti-slavery and anti-alcohol movements, at least in the beginning (Susan B. Anthony and Cady Stanton, anyone? Their greatest ally in those cases, interestingly enough, ended up being Frederick Douglass, a black man.)
Just. ffffff. I struggle with this every day in GSA, trying to promote a view of the GLB as well as the trans* community that isn’t exclusively white, middle class and wholly assimilationist. I can’t do that if the whitewashing of the community continues, and some kid here doesn’t see gay people who are like him and he thinks that being gay is a white person thing and. blahhhhh.
(One day I should also address how the ace community fits into all of this and how I think my own fear of being too comparative of discriminations when in fact (if I didn’t look the way I do) I could carry a hell of a lot of heterosexual privilege and yep. But that’s for another time.)
